If you have well water, it's important to test annually since a well can become contaminated in numerous ways. Bacteria can enter wells from surface water or from the ground. Heavy metals in pipes, arsenic that naturally occurs in groundwater, radon that is naturally produced when uranium decays in soil and water, and pesticide contamination are just some of the things that can taint the water you are drinking.

If you get your water from a municipality, read the quality report on water that must be published annually. But even if the report is excellent, that does not mean that your pipes are free from harmful lead or bacteria. The only way to know for sure is to test your water.
